Recovering lost data costing small firms £4 billion

Small businesses are wasting £4 billion per year through lost productivity because they do not have adequate IT back-up systems in place, according to data storage firm Adaptec.

Adaptec’s research found small firms spend an average of five working days a year finding and restoring business data that has been lost as a result of human error or IT failure. This costs the UK small and medium-sized business sector, in terms of wages and lost productivity, £4 billion.

The research also found small firms take more time than necessary to restore lost data, because 77 per cent still use tape storage to back up their data, rather than faster, disk-based storage systems.

“The problem is that most people talk about backing-up and archiving data, when what they should really care about is being able to quickly restore the data when they need it,” said Adaptec’s general manager, Russ Johnson.

“Small firms have traditionally favoured tape storage because of the low cost. However, a disk-based system can accelerate restore times by up to 80 per cent.”
